The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
