Coaching a Baby to Become an 'English Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Cost?

Child education concept
The company responsible for the listing claims that what seems like "extravagance or oddity" is truly "deliberate commitment in early-stage instruction".

"Parents based in the northern part of London wants to find an exceptional and qualified instructor to guide their smallest child on his initial journey to turning into an British gentleman."

Upon seeing this post, you might easily overlook the term "beginning" as just an expression.

But, it could be the most significant aspect of this unusual employment listing, as it seeks to hire a tutor for a infant.

Many of submissions have already been submitted since the anonymous family posted their request for the highly paid tutor, who must be "an exceptional individual".

In recent few weeks, the advert has attracted notice throughout the press, with numerous questioning why?

Forward-Thinking Method

The CEO, head and founder of a global tutoring firm, which is assisting the family in their hunt, explained that in spite of initial doubt, he viewed the plan "forward-looking", and "innovative".

When he spoke with the family, he said they understood the unusual character of their requirement, and how early in age their son is.

Nevertheless, they clarified that they "were unwilling to delay any longer" to engage a tutor, as they had waited until their firstborn was five, and by that point "cultural conditioning had already taken hold".

What exactly did the family refer to by "cultural predisposition"?

It's "everything", Adam responded. "The way you eat, the way you speak".

He stated the firstborn had adopted "very nuanced, body language" from the family, and had assumed their cultural ways. The family informed Adam they wished to avoid the same situation to recur with their younger child.

The plan: To hire a British tutor, who must speak with RP, to influence the baby from the very start.

Tutoring discussion
The education firm say the advert has initiated a broader conversation about how families view schooling, advantage and the function of family background in education.

Natural Absorption

"Much of the development at the start here is rather osmotic," stated the CEO.

It's through this osmosis that the family are expecting the child will adopt the British traits they aim to instil.

He noted the tutor needed to be someone who went to "prestigious academies – the same kinds of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The tutor must be the appropriate candidate, they'll be performing things they may not realize they're doing, simply by nature," he added.

Cost Not Relevant

The family informed the expert the successful candidate should preferably also have knowledge of or enthusiasm in horse riding, winter sports, artistic pursuits and instrumental training so as to influence the child in a wide range of hobbies.

Additionally though, he said the family desired the tutor to register the child on a selection of classes so the child would be "horseback riding and starting an instrument by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's view, helping their son become a "British gentleman" will bring about success and open doors.

"Taking into account the pros and cons of that, because it's certainly a status symbol," he notes.

But, notwithstanding all this guidance in "English culture", could the child adopt alleged cultural bias from the multicultural family he is raised by in any case?

"Absolutely", answered Adam. "The family understand this could fail, but they've merely embraced the perspective of, 'we should try and we should start as quickly as we can', because the cost of it is not a concern," he explained.

Idealistic and Unrealistic

There are some in the private teaching field who share those concerns.

Another CEO, head and founder of Blue Education, who supplies private tutors, stated that "the process of becoming bicultural, or in fact, becoming oneself, is something that must be experienced personally, not designed."

Peter explained that he had emigrated from China to the UK at the time of seven, and had been brought up experiencing and living both cultures. He continued to study at a prestigious UK institution.

The executive was the first individual originating from mainland China to be chosen to the post of Financial Officer of the university debating society.

"The notion that an individual can function as a living vessel of UK identity, an individual who can possibly transplant the characteristics of a English gentleman to a one-year-old child, strikes me as idealistic and unfeasible," he stated.

"Based on my background, engaging a quintessentially English tutor from early childhood will will not automatically create the goal they hope for.

"I did not have that kind of mentor, and yet I have been privileged enough to enjoy several of the experiences they hope for their son."

He added: "The truth is, personal identity cannot be dictated from the external environment; it must be selected, and it must be internally driven."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, Britishness is something Adam hopes can be educated – and commercialized.

"I think the reality that the world views us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
